Just a quick update – the boys are having another great day! Liam did not pull his breathing tube out all night so at 8 AM this morning, they decided he was ready and the doctors extubated him! He has since been doing really well and is breathing all on his own just like his brother (with the help of a high-flow nasal cannula). Both boys are now free of their ventilators! I wasn’t able to be with Martina at the hospital this morning, but she got to kangaroo care with Owen for the first time (she said he did GREAT) and while she was doing that, his isolette was changed out with an isolette for less serious babies so that’s another GREAT sign and a step in the right direction! Last night, Martina got to hold Owen without his ventilator so he could actually make sounds. He was awake for quite a bit of the holding and although he didn’t cry once (which in some crazy way I’m eagerly looking forward to simply because I can’t wait to hear his little voice) but he did make all kinds of cooing sounds with his mom and it was so great to finally hear him for the first time – after 49 days!
That’s all for now.
Love,
Eric
